Performance on the Defense Automated Neurobehavioral Assessment Battery (DANA) and Simulated Driving Performance Over 50h of Continuous Wakefulness: Correlation between Neurocognitive and Operational Performance

Takeaways:

“This study by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, University of South Australia, and the Defense and Science and Technology Organization, Australia, examined the relationship between neurocognitive and driving performance during sleep deprivation in subjects receiving caffeine or placebo. Results from the study demonstrate the aptitude of DANA as an operational performance predictor. “

Summary:

“Independent study demonstrating the sensitivity of DANA to fatigue and its ability to predict operational performance. Objectives: Examine the correlation between neurocognitive and operational performance. Methods: After receiving baseline sleep, 24 participants were randomly assigned to either a caffeine or placebo group. All participants were subject to 50 hours of sleep deprivation and completed DANA cognitive testing and operational testing on a driving simulator every 4 hours. Results: Performance decrements in DANA testing and driving simulator testing were similarly impacted by sleep deprivation after 20 hours of sleep deprivation in the placebo group and by the end of the study in the caffeine group. DANA as an Operational Performance Predictor: The consistency, magnitude, and statistical significance of between- and within-subject correlations demonstrates the aptitude of DANA to predict driving performance (average and individual) during sleep deprivation.”
